Cognee vs Mem0 vs VertexRAG: Graph Memory Tools Compared

Cognee, Mem0, and VertexRAG all live at the intersection of graph + LLM memory. They solve overlapping problems with different shapes. A side-by-side comparison.

The category of "graph-augmented memory for LLMs" went from one paper to a dozen serious tools in 18 months. Three of them — Cognee, Mem0, and VertexRAG — get conflated constantly because they all wire a graph next to an LLM. They solve overlapping problems with very different shapes. Here's an honest side-by-side so you can pick without learning the differences in production.

What each one actually is

Cognee

Open-source Python framework for building "AI memory" — a graph + vector store + processing pipeline that you wire into your own application. Pitches itself as ECL (Extract, Cognify, Load): extract entities from any data, "cognify" into a graph, load for retrieval. Self-hosted by default; managed cloud exists.

Shape: framework. You install it, you write Python around it, you decide what data flows in.

Mem0

A memory layer specifically for conversational agents. The pitch is "give your AI a memory of users across sessions" — store facts gleaned from chat history, retrieve them when the same user returns. Now offers a graph mode that captures relationships between facts. SaaS-first; open-source SDK available.

Shape: opinionated memory service. Bring chat traces, get a per-user memory store back.

VertexRAG

Hosted graph RAG API for document corpora. Bring documents, run queries; we handle ingest, entity extraction, the graph, the vector index, fusion, and reranking. Not user-conversation-aware; it's a retrieval layer for documents.

Shape: managed API. One endpoint to ingest, one to query.

The use-case map

  • "I want my chatbot to remember things about each user across sessions." → Mem0 is built for this.
  • "I want full control of the ingest + processing pipeline and I'm comfortable writing Python around a framework." → Cognee.
  • "I have a corpus of documents and want graph-quality retrieval as a service." → VertexRAG.

These overlap less than the marketing pages suggest. Mem0 is not great at heavy document ingest; VertexRAG doesn't track per-user state; Cognee can be wired into either workload but you'll do the wiring.

The honest tradeoffs

Cognee gives you the most control and asks for the most engineering. The pipeline abstraction is clean but it's still a framework — you'll write code, run a vector store, run a graph store, and operate them. For teams who want to own the stack and have the headcount, it's a strong choice.

Mem0 is brilliant if your problem is conversational memory. Building per-user memory from scratch is harder than people think (deduplication, decay, contradiction handling) — Mem0 ships that. If your problem isn't conversational memory specifically, you're paying for features you won't use.

VertexRAG is the smallest moving part if you have a documents corpus and want graph-quality retrieval. It's not opinionated about your application — bring queries, get cited answers — but it doesn't try to be a memory layer for agents.

Where the three converge

All three are betting that pure vector RAG hits a ceiling, and that adding typed entities + relationships is the next layer. None of them disagree about the architecture — they disagree about what shape developers want it in. The space is fast-moving; expect more convergence in the next year, especially around standard graph-extraction prompts and storage formats.

If you're picking right now

  • Conversational agent that needs memory across sessions → Mem0
  • Self-hosted pipeline with custom requirements → Cognee
  • Document corpus, want managed graph RAG → VertexRAG (try the API)
  • Not sure yet → use our free Entity Extractor to see how dense your corpus's implicit graph is. Dense graphs benefit most from any of these tools.
